Second Hand Dust
PM10 caused pulmonary lung distress
A
slight departure from our normal format. This is a message not from
"we" but from me. It is a personal note. I just returned
from my doctor's office where I was told I have pulmonary distress -
something is making it hard for my lungs to breath.
| I was ready to
blame it on second hand smoke but my doctor tells me that as
much as I don't like the smell of my wife's cigarette
smoke, she smokes outside on the front porch and not
enough smoke is getting to my lungs for that to be a the
cause.
Keep in mind that I work out
strenuously for 30 minutes a day. And recently I spent 10 days
above the tree line on a backpacking trip that included hikes
over two 12,000 foot passes in one day. Doc says I am
otherwise in great health. |
 |
So
I asked my doctor what else it could be and he said that if I live
in a dusty area, especially if I am downwind of construction site,
that likely is the cause. He said it is a big problem in the Valley.
He
said if there is something I can do to control my exposure to the
dust that I should do that.
To
that I had to laugh. Doc I said, I have been trying to control the
dust in the town where I live for over a year.

Dust blowing from Skyborne development causing near white out
conditions this spring. Unaltered photo at intersection of
Pierson Blvd. and Indian Avenue. |
Regular
readers of this website know the efforts we have been making.
Those efforts have largely been to bring relief to neighbors
and other residents throughout the city that have severe dust
problems.
It
is now very personally distressing to find that even in a
residential neighborhood that has not be nearly as bad as some
of the others I have been working to help, I am still feeling
the effect. |
|
DHS PM10 caused pulmonary
(lung) distress heading for failure.
My actual recent blood work
results showing the beginning of my pulmonary (Lung)
failure
I have never smoked and avoid smokers and smoke. Will
the developer purchased political favors (of looking the other way regarding lack of meaningful dust
control) by the current Weyuker council majority end up killing us?
If Hank Hohenstein's quote is true that;
" Our city is is current PM10 compliance" Then how will he explain the above results to my children?
Answer: "Developer campaign donations" |
I
repeat this website's call. Hank Hohenstein, Mary Stephens, Yvonne
Parks and now Dot Reed, do you care about the health and well being
of the citizens of this town? I say you do not. I say you only care
about your developer buddies. Prove me wrong!
Sincerely,
Gabriel King

The question:
How Did Alex Bias Manage To Win?
Was it Mary or Murphy?

We
want to return for a moment to a letter to the editor that appeared
in the Desert Sun that said, "It was only through a series of
"Murphy's Law" disasters that he (Alex Bias) was elected."
Someone
is fooling themselves - or trying to fool you - if that is their
explanation for why they could not win.
-
They
had every reason going for them.
-
They had a hand
picked vice mayor.
-
They had control of the city council.
-
They had
tens of thousands of dollars of insider campaign contributions.
-
They
even had the city helping them by instructing city staff to
remove opposition campaign signs and then ordered them to leave
the signs alone once their signs were put in the same place.
-
They
had their minions destroy, trample, tear up and remove other's
campaign signs.
-
They
even had the city spend extra money to change stationary so
their chosen candidate could change her title from Mayor Pro Tem
to Vice Mayor - Vice Mayor sounded so much more Mayor!
They
had all that and they still could not win. It had nothing to do with
Murphy’s law. Anybody from the outside looking at the last
election without understanding the personalities would have
concluded that Mary should have won by a landslide.
What
happened was very simple. Mary was out-voted 2 to 1 against all
other candidates for Mayor. She was out-voted 2 to 1 against all the
people that signed the recall to remove her from office.
She
lost by a landslide is what happened! That's not Murphy’s Law.
That's Mary’s Law.

Our
E-mail Letter (below) to Kakie Urich with the Desert Sun
Dear
Kakie Urich
I hope this helps. I copied recent
articles from Friends Of Desert Hot Springs website for you to
review. Please review the first story below at least.
There is a lot going on behind the scenes. The bottom line is,
the council majority are making many decisions
(as usual) illegally behind closed session doors. They torpedoed
the meeting so that there would not be a discussion regarding
creating a "Citizen's Committee" to discuss the
hiring of a city attorney. See city
agenda link here where Alex adgendized the request for such
"citizen's committee".
The other
agenda items for yesterday's meeting are here too!
This
was just a big orchestrated phony smoke screen so Mary Stephens
could justify ending the meeting to not deal with these issues
adgendized by the Mayor shown on the above link adgenda. The last
city attorney they (Mary, Hank and Yvonne) illegally selected in
secret closed session. The firm had gross conflict of interest because
they represented the city of Carson against a law suit filed by our
current city manager, Ann Marie Gallant.
Things are not as they appear on the surface. You got to dig a
little below the surface to get the real story. There are many
things being done illegally in secret meetings and the current
council is torpedoing efforts by Alex Bias to bring these illegal
actions to light. That is another reason
why Alex refuses to attend the closed sessions where they violate
the brown act by discussing and making decisions illegally about
things that should be made in the open per law.
Thanks

Did Cindy Uken Get Scathing Emails
From The Scott Matas Campaign?

Not
long ago we reported that controversial housing developer
Walter Luce (Mayer Luce Development) was publicly endorsing
Scott Matas for city council and was the candidate of choice
for the city council majority. We also published that Matas
had given glowing endorsement of that same city council majority.
For
this reporting we received several scathing emails from the
Scott Matas campaign.
Now
comes this story from Cindy Uken of Cindyuken.com: Matas
is favorite among incumbent city councilors (link here).
In the article Uken reports the same connection between Matas
and the council majority that we reported a week
earlier. But to Uken's credit she cements the relationship
between the Matas and the city council majority with a public
endorsement of Scott Matas by Councilman Hank Hohenstein and
other councilors that showered him with praise.
Perhaps those
council members were just repaying the favor for the quote we
reported:
"The
current City Council has a majority of smart, honest people
who care about their community, not their own political
gains." -
Candidate Scott Matas
Our question:
Did Scott Matas also send harsh emails to Cindy Uken for her
reporting of his close ties to and endorsement of the current city council
majority?

Who Is Working For Who?
They
call the "Special" meeting with as little notice as humanely
possible, waiting to give public notice of the meeting until the very last legal
minute to make sure as few as possible will know to attend the
meeting. Well, except for the chosen few council members who will be
notified to be there well in advance. So the few council members will be able to
attend the special meeting, not you and not me. The citizens don't
count.
Who is working for who?
So what were they meeting about this Tuesday? Anything
special? Here is the list of items on the agenda. You decide
if these items are important enough for the public to be notified in
time to be there?
Under
City Council Development Sub-Committee Special Meeting Agenda;
General Plan Status Report
Contract Services Status Report
Palm Springs School District Issues Status Report
Two Bunch Palms Status Report
Mission Springs Water District Issues
Under
City Council Budget Sub-Committee Special Meeting Agenda;
City Financial Statements
Redevelopment Agency Financial Statements
Mid-year Budget Review
Committee Member Discussion
We
at FODHS think our readers will agree that these are important
issues that deserve more than the bare minimum legal public notice
requirements. Open government is not about pushing the limits of the
law on public notice to keep the public away. It is about making
sure more than enough notice is given when discussing these
very important issues.
Open government is about making sure the public is given ample time
to plan to attend these important meetings. That did not happen last
Tuesday. Shame shame on any council person that agreed to attend
with such short notice being provided to the public.

FODHS
Appreciation Statement For Our Very Own
DHS COP Volunteer Force
After
FODHS's experience with the Palm Springs COP volunteers, FODHS came
to the realization and can honestly say that our DHS citizens have
much to be proud of when it comes to our very own COP volunteers
dedication and professionalism. FODHS has kept in touch with
the DHS COP volunteers. FODHS can state that the
professionalism of DHS COP is very much a high cut above what FODHS experienced
yesterday from the Palm Springs volunteers. FODHS could
never image this scenario EVER happening in our city!
This
experience illustrates to FODHS just how lucky we are to have
the high quality, high caliber, very dedicated DHS COP
volunteers. We as a city can be proud of our small but dedicated COP
force. We need to support their POSITIVE efforts to reduce
crime and help our stretched police forced when called
upon.
If you are a high
quality person who wants to volunteer your time doing something much
more exciting than just showing someone the location of the elevator
at the local hospital, join the rewarding experience of volunteerism
with of our very dedicated COP volunteer force and make DHS a safer
place for our families. Pick up and fill out the COP volunteer
form at the DHS police station. You will be background checked (no
felony convictions) and interviewed (no cowboy mentality or police
wanta be's). Then the fun begins. Oh...and we also give
tickets to those who park in handicapped spaces too... even if they
happen to be Palm Springs COP!

Merry Christmas from DHS, Kalifornia

Car found about 10:00 AM Today
Yesterday,
Christmas day, our son's car was stolen around 5:30 p.m. as it was
parked in front of our house. Christmas morning his girl friend's
car was got stolen while parked in front of her house in Palm
Springs, and also yesterday a friend's new Volvo in DHS had its tail
lights bashed out with some rocks and his neighbor's van window was
bashed out with the same rock.
I hope your Christmas day was a little better than mine and that of
all those affected by the Christmas day vandalism spree.
But it is not all happening on Christmas. It is rampant in our town.
Lately, I have noticed windows of downtown businesses on Palm Drive
being shot out and now just boarded up (who can blame the owner for
leaving them that way and not replacing the windows). A store front
on Pierson was set on fire recently in an act of senseless
vandalism.
So, with most our police officers transferring out of DHS we find
our city in a state where it is harder than ever to stop this sort
of thing. It all started when Mary Stephens and former Mayor
Matt Weyuker replaced our competent police leadership with Mary
Stephens personal friend (who was looking for a job) and the totally
irresponsible and out of control spending (Hansen Contract) that
caused a cut in our police department. Is it any wonder crime in DHS
is spiraling out of control?
Mary
may think that I am blaming her for all the crime in the whole
Coachella Valley. No,
I am blaming her for the crime spree in Desert Hot Springs that
happened under her watch.
Mary, I blame you directly for this crime and for a Christmas day
that will be remembered as a bad time in our city and not a good
one. Resign now so we can start to undo your legacy. If the
joy of Christmas was lost, you can at least resign now and make it a
Happy New Year for the rest of us.

'It's
Only Dust, You Live in the desert.
What do you want them to do, stop
building?'
Press
Release Here
We will answer that
question in a minute. First,
here is the news out of Palm Springs by Channel 2 News.

By
Nicky Vallee
CBS 2 News
Cocksy,
or Valley Fever, as it is called, attacks those with weakened immune
systems. It is treatable, but can be very serious, in some
cases even causing death.
A
palm springs
woman has contracted valley fever, she tells her story to CBS
2. Its called pm-10, dust that is blown into the air from
construction projects. John and Nancy Probst know it well and
say they are now prisoners in their own home because of it.
Nancy Probst feared the worst, her cancer must be back.
Doctors
diagnosed Probst with Cocksy, commonly known as Valley Fever.
It is a disease that attacks those with compromised immune systems. (continue
story here)
To
the question above...
First, it has never been about dust. It is about a total disregard
for the health and well being or the citizens of Desert Hot Springs
by council persons that are so close to developers that they look
the other way even
as we have pounded this issue month after month after month! and
documented it (in part) here.
Developers must be made to follow the laws and the agreements they
signed to control PM10 construction dust.
|

Near white-out conditions caused by Skyborne Development
|

Those are home in the background awash in deadly PM10 dust.
|
A
Case Of Local Health
Downwind
of the Rancho Del Oro subdivision, one of the many neighborhoods
with severe dust problems that we have documented, lives a man that not
long ago recovered from Leukemia.
Finally well enough
to come out of his home and enjoy his grandchildren, he was soon hit in the face with
dust and fine PM10 dust that even with his door and windows closed sifts into his home.
About
the Politician Saying it is Only Dust...
That
politician that told us many times that it is only dust, what do you
expect is the same politician that is making telephone calls to
voters in Desert Hot Springs to ask them what they think the problems are
that are facing Desert Hot Springs.
When that politician calls, tell her she is the problem. Tell her to
get out of the pockets of the developers and show some concern for
the health and well being of our citizens. If you get
a call from councilperson Yvonne Parks asking you what is wrong, tell her,
"Yvonne, you are what is wrong! Stop cozying up to the
developers and show concern for the rest of us"
And
Finally...
Thanks to our reader
that called to let us know about the CBS Channel 2 News story.
did you see
this Gab?, you have written so much and tried so hard to make
everyone aware of the dangers of PM 10 hazards in DHS ? just
wondered if anyone in DHS paid any attention to this news
broadcast?? Bless you ! You are the hero of so many of the quiet
voices in DHS.
It
is calls and emails like this one that keep us going. Thank you so
much!

Myths
On Pierson Funding
Very
interesting is how people we talked to believed that most of the
money for the Pierson project came from government grants. NOT TRUE!
Over 2/3 of the project cost was paid for with city funds. Only 1/3
came from grants.

Rotating
Mayor's Seat. Rotating Open Debate.
There
was a lot that came out of last nights council meeting and we will
get to it but this little gem from Hank Hohenstein stands out.
Speaking
in favor (ad nausea) of the rotating mayor proposal, Hohenstein said
putting the idea on the ballot is good if for no other reason than
it will open up debate on this vitally important issue.
But
when it comes to open debate, debate is a rotating proposition with
Hank - sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Our
question for Hank is this. If you wanted to open debate on this
"vitally important" issue, why was this item one of the
last items on the agenda (11:15 p.m.) making it such of a hardship
for people to come and speak? If it was an important enough item
to
It
is just as Mayor Alex Bias proposed and the majority on the council
rejected. Items of critical interest and importance to the citizens
of Desert Hot Springs should be at the beginning of the agenda. Hank
did not agree when Bias proposed it and he did not agree last night
when he wanted his idea to get through council with as little debate
and opposition as possible.
(For
the record, every citizen that did stick around to speak on this
late night issue spoke against it. Not one person spoke in favor)
This
council member that says open debate is good for the city did his
best to make sure open debate on his idea last night was as
difficult to come by as possible. Shameless is the word for it.

What Are The Ingredients For DHS's Highest Burglary Rate in
California?
(5 times the national average)
According
to this local CBS Channel 2 reporter, it is a combination of meth-amphetamine
addiction and lack of funds for adequate policing.
The good ole boy and girls club (from under Weyuker to Stephens
leadership) has purposely chased away new business's in DHS with
their very high business related business fees, sign fees,
impossible regulations and arrogant road blocking city department
managers. The good ole boys and girls club have done this to protect
their special interest business friends from outsider
competition.
Our
local retail business's are forced to take their signs down to save
thousands in punitive city sign fees. How does this make any sense?
Why doesn't the local Chamber support the mayors effort to reduce
these sign fees?
Not
only have these anti-business policies kept our city stuck in the nineteenth
century, but these policies have kept our city starving for
retail sales tax dollars that could be used for the police services
needed to clean up these major crime problems.
Ultimately
DHS's answer to these crime problems is "RETAIL, RETAIL
RETAIL" not "ROOF TOPS, ROOF TOPS". We already
spend 65% of our retail dollars at down valley cities where they use
our sales tax fees to reduce their crime, not ours.

Chamber of
Commerce Sides With Council
Dumps Mayor For Breakfast

Dan Gibbons - Chamber President
They
used to call it the Mayor's Breakfast. "They" is the
Chamber of Commerce. It was their breakfast they were hosting. But
when the council removed Mayor Alex Bias from all council committee
appointments and said it also wanted Mayor Bias removed from the
Mayor's Breakfast, the Chamber of Commerce said "OK."
Let's
be clear about this. It was never the council's decision to make
that the Mayor would no longer host the traditional breakfast
meeting of the town. But the Chamber decided to take sides and has
now made it official. Mayor Bias will not be speaking at the Chamber
of Commerce Mayor's Breakfast.
Most
sad is that the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has no qualms
about taking the Chamber into the thick of Desert Hot Springs
politics. This is not its proper role and the action shows misguided
leadership of this organization.
With
No Mayor, What's For Breakfast?

Without
the Mayor, how can they call it the Mayor's Breakfast? Well, they
can't. So they have changed the name. A
short article appearing in the Desert Sun
reveals it is now called a "Leadership Breakfast."
And
with that we are sure you have the same question we do...
Without
leadership, how can they call it a Leadership Breakfast? Seems the
Chamber is in the same fix as when the Mayor was no longer a part of
the Mayor's Breakfast. How can you call a breakfast meeting what it
isn't?
Folks,
we are not making this stuff up. The power-click in town is far too
full of themselves. What's next? Will they order all reference to
Alex Bias to be stricken from every tablet, never to be spoken
again.
Finally,
for those in love with breakfast meetings - whatever those breakfast
meetings are called - it will no longer be a "Leadership"
Breakfast. The event will be moved to Lunch.

Stanson v. Mott
The Supreme Court wrote in Stanson: A fundamental precept
of this nation's democratic electoral process is that the
government may not 'take sides' in election contests or bestow an
unfair advantage on one of several competing factions. A
principal danger feared by our country's founders lay in the
possibility that the holders of governmental authority would use
official power improperly to perpetuate themselves, or their allies,
in office...; the selective use of public
funds in election campaigns,
of course, raises the specter of just such an improper distortion of
the democratic electoral process.
City
of
Desert Hot Springs
is funding an organization, Chamber of Commerce that has
'taken sides' in election contests or bestow an unfair advantage on
one of several competing factions. by removing the
Mayor's Breakfast in perfect concert/harmony with council majority
punitive actions (stated "sanctioning of Mayor for
disagreement) to remove the current elected mayor from the Mayor's
breakfast and other commissions.
10.1
Public Funds May Not Be Used For Personal Purposes
The starting point for any analysis concerning the
misuse of public funds
begins with the principle that public
funds must be expended for
an authorized public
purpose. An expenditure is made for a public
purpose when its purpose is to benefit the public
interest rather than private individuals or private purposes.
The
Current City manager admitted in a recent e-mail to us that she can
not determine if city funds where used or not used in the recently
canceled "mayor's breakfast" or the newly created
"leadership (cough) luncheon". Therefore city funds
are being used without being authorized
in violation of section 10.1 above and Supreme Court case law
regarding Stanson.

Reader's Letter of the Day says it all!
Dear
Sir's
I would like to sign the petition for the recall of Yvonne Parks. I
agree ...we need a total change. And I don't agree with the rotating
Mayor. The Mayor should be elected by the people and Mayor Bias
was!! I think that the city council has been unfair to Mayor Bias
because he wants to make things right in DHS and those people
"serving the public" on the city council have only been
serving themselves!!

Political Punching Bag - Not Without Consequences

Not every email we
get is a nice one. From our recent efforts to bring the Chamber of
Commerce into line and out of politics we have gotten a couple of
emails that asked why FODHS was attacking the Chamber.
First, no one at FODHS is attacking the Chamber. We are responding
to the Chamber's actions. The Chamber members and Chamber leadership
need to know - should know at this point in their adult lives - that
actions have consequences.
The Chamber clearly acted to support the majority on the city
council when the council expressed its desire to sanction Mayor Alex
Bias by removing him from a Chamber Mayor's breakfast function. The
consequence of the Chamber taking political sides has been our
response.
If the Chamber did not want to be put in a political spotlight, it
should not have acted politically. No reasonable person can deny
that over the issue of the Mayor's Breakfast, the Chamber did
exactly that. It acted politically. We are surprised the Chamber
does not comprehend this.
Something else that surprises us is that people seemingly do not
realize that there are now two political parties in Desert Hot
Springs. Not Republicans and Democrats but rather a party that is in
control and a party trying to gain some measure of control over the
errant ways of the city council.
Put us in the later category. And then hear this. If you think we
are going to sit around like a punching bag taking blow after blow
after blow without punching back, you are very much mistaken.
As much as some people in town would like it to be so, politics is
not a one way street. Not with us.
That said, you have our promise, when we punch back, it will be with
facts, documentation where appropriate and with as well reasoned an
argument as we can muster. Some people will not like that because it
goes against their interests. And they will continue to send us
nasty emails because of it. But not for any good reason.

Many Homes Designed by FODHS Founder

It
was under former Mayor Matt Weyuker and
Current Council member Mary Stephens and then Planning Commission

pushed out of the city.
Those
homes that were rejected in Desert Hot Springs city limits are now
on tour just outside our city.

where rejected by short sighted past and current city council

They where originally planned

An Open Letter To The
Desert Hot Springs City Council.
Dear
Mayor Alex Bias, Mayor Pro Tem Mary Stephens, Councilpersons Hank
Hohenstein, Yvonne Parks and Dot Reed,
This is to encourage you to publish the names of every law firm you
are considering hiring, to publish how much they will be paid on an
annual basis and to provide the general terms under which they will
serve.
There is no reason to keep this information secret. There is every
reason to make it available to the public.
You have already blundered once in this process by selecting a law
firm with a very significant conflict of interest. Had you revealed
the name of this firm when its name first came up as under
consideration, we - and you- would have learned of the problem with
them and not ultimately selected them.
Let's not make the same mistake again.
We call on the Dan Gibbons of the Chamber of Commerce who recently
has been critical of efforts such as ours to take a stand on this
issue. You have already jumped into the political game. You might as
well let everyone know where the Chamber stands on this issue.
The question: Should the selection of an attorney be handled in
secret? We say no.

An
(Un)Reasonable? Proposal
Working against City Hall

A
proposal was forwarded at last Tuesday's council meeting that leads
us to ask a couple of questions of Council members Hank Hohenstein,
Yvonne Parks and Mary Stephens.
The
proposal (put in the form of a question): Should items of
significant importance to the public at large be placed early on the
agenda to invite increased public participation?
The
answer of the council was "No." A motion so made at the
last city council meeting failed to gain a second by either
councilmember Hohenstein, Parks or Stephens.
We
can think of only two reasons why the council members would have
failed to second this motion. First, they do not agree with it. They
think important agenda items should be placed anywhere on the
agenda, even late into the evening without consideration for public
interest or input.
Or
two, they were so transfixed on getting at Mayor Alex Bias that
there was no way any of them were going to second any motion Mayor
Alex Bias made (the motion
was proposed by Bias).
Our
question to council members Hohenstein, Parks and Stephens: Will you
place this item on the agenda of the next meeting and if not, will

An (Un)Reasonable?
Election
Working Against
The Other Council Members |
| |

|

|
|
While offering only
a few words (as is normal under the constraints of a television
newscast)
we still find this script from a KESQ News story on the
council action against Mayor Alex Bias to be telling of exactly
what took place on Tuesday night when Bias was stripped of most of
his Mayoral duties.
|
There's
a war of words at
Desert
Hot Springs
City Hall
as tensions reach a boiling point.
Mayor Alex Bias
has been stripped of much of his power in a controversial move
by the council. In the last council meeting, the remaining
three Council members removed all of his important committee
duties.
The council
believes that Bias has spent his last nine months in office
working against the rest of the council members. Bias plans to
file a complaint to the county and governor's office.
"The mayor
is an elected official. I cannot be stripped of my powers by
council members that perceive themselves to be the ruling
elite," said Bias.
Council member
Mary Stephens says the move will help the council focus on the
city's progress. |
The sentence in the above story
that for us jumps off the page is this one: The council
believes that Bias has spent his last nine months in office
working against the rest of the council members.
Was
Alex Bias elected to work with the rest of the council members?
Unless we are to forget what the last election was about, the answer
is a resounding "No." The last election was precisely to
put someone on the council that would bring a different direction at
City Hall.
To believe otherwise is to believe
that Mary Stephens was overwhelmingly elected in her bid for Mayor
and that Will Piper was successful in his re-election bid. That of
course was not the case.
City
Finds $1.3 Million Under Pierson Blvd.
An
interesting find has
turned-up under Pierson Road. The city funded part of the $3.7
million project with $1.3 million coming from a city development
impact fees fund. It should have come from the redevelopment agency
funds.
Development
impact fees are what is collected from developers. They are used to
put in sidewalks and road improvements. Those fees are collected
from projects all over the city. But a big chunk of that fund ($1.3
MILLION) was used on Pierson (a road that happens to head to a
certain council member's property. Hmmmmm!).
Meanwhile,
sidewalks and city streets in the downtown area are neglected, even
though money was collected from new housing starts in the downtown
areas.
Well,
not so fast. Ann Marie looked into this and determined that so much
of the development impact fees should not have been used for Pierson
and that instead the money should have come from the city's
redevelopment agency fund.
With
an accounting adjustment she put $1.3 million back into the
development impact fee fund, making money available for other areas.
We are not sure if she found it first or if because of a story she
read in the Desert
Local News but either way she knew what to do once it was
discovered.

FODHS
obtains letter between Councilman Hank Hohenstein
and Member of Former City Legal Firm.
(click letter to view scanned letter)
From
the letter: "Your note
was appreciated. Jeff and I are anxious to sit down with you in the
near future for diner and talk.
I do think we would be a great fit and I think Jeff and I could
rally the 'legal team' left in place after Corky's departure....The
Mayor will be called upon to play a very significant policy making
role. You are up to the task now."
Our
City Council is in the process of deciding which legal firm to go
with. Toni Eggebraaten who has been filling in on an interim basis
as the city attorney is likely opting to go back to her full time
position as an attorney for CVAG.
So why the hold-up on selecting a new firm? It can't be Alex Bias
getting in the way. Alex
Bias has refused to attend any more secret closed session
(unrecorded) meetings. Could it be that
Hank Hohenstein is pushing for "his" legal team (and
Mayoral Supporter) and Mary Stephens is not happy with that
choice? Is Mary Stephens saying NO to the firm that says Hank
(and not her) "is up to the task" as Mayor per above
letter? Or do Hank Mary and Yvonne Parks all agree on a
selection but City manager, Ann Marie Galant is putting the brakes
on the deal over possible conflict of interest (again, see the
letter above).
As
we said, this all needs to be out in the open. Say what you want
about Mayor Bias but on this issue, he is correct. These selections
needed to be out in open public session and the secret closed
session council sessions need to recorded. Stop these back
room deals (you support me for Mayor and I will support you as city
attorney). Get this process in out into the open, now!

Appointment Shortlist
City Council readies to fill seat
of the Late Gary Bosworth
The Desert Hot
Springs City Council is getting ready to appoint a candidate to fill
the seat of the late Gary Bosworth, an event that is expected to take place
Tuesday,
September 5 at the regularly scheduled city council meeting. Here on
no authority but our own is the short list of candidates being
considered.
|
Candidate
|
Odds |
|
Mary Stephens
Council Member |
She once tried to
extend her term of office by a vote of the council. That effort
was defeated by a public uproar. Here is her chance to get
those extra couple of years she sought the last time. |
|
Hank Hohenstein
Council Member |
Knee-deep in every
city scandal of the last several years and with no chance of
being re-elected, this is Hank's chance to give the voters a
couple more years to forget the day he says he "woke up
stupid." |
|
Adam Sanchez
Pictured Everywhere |
There is a case to be made for appointing the next highest vote getter in the most recent election.
But what would Adam do with all that campaign money he
collected from developers? |
|
Will Piper
Past Council Member |
One of the lowest
vote-getters in the last election. If the council is looking
for yet another political black eye, they will appoint Will. Will is a great guy but a bad, bad choice
for appointment. |
|
Al Schmidt
Developer |
Al is a local
developer and member of the planning commission. Perfect! He
can join the procession with Mary, Hank and Yvonne as they
excuse themselves from voting over conflicts of interest. |
|
Jan Pye
Past Council Member |
We hate to include
Jan Pye in the company this list is keeping so far. Jan is one
class act and her appointment would be one smart political
move. That's why we give it little hope. |
|
Gabriel King
Architect Draftsman |
We understand Mary
Stephens is frantically trying to reach Mr. King to see if he is
interested in the position. Alas, Mr. King is on vacation and
unreachable. |
|
Dot Reed
Good Samaritan |
Chances of Dot
being appointed are slim to none. Dot is great. But the council
will never give up the one person that steps-up to the podium
every council meeting to praise them. |
|
Walt Luce
Developer |
We understand he
may be looking for another job. An ideal situation. Once on
council, he could hire himself as an accountant working for
his company. |

More BIA Signs Found with Graffiti!
BIA Directional Signs
Still Not Maintained!
The privilege to place signs in City right of way carries responsibility
to
maintain those signs. This sign is on the new Pierson Boulevard
and we have a report from a reader of another one with graffiti
on it on Palm Drive near Revivals.
|
|
It should not take a citizen report or FODHS to bring the
condition of these signs to the attention of the city or the
BIA. The BIA needs a regular and proactive sign
maintenance program to keep its signs graffiti free. No more
than 24 hours should pass before graffiti on these signs is
covered over. It should not take days and even months as
documented by FODHS.
We quote one of our readers. "If they can not maintain the
signs they should not be allowed to have them on our
streets." FODHS could not agree more. This city council
needs to answer why it allows the BIA to put up these signs but
does not require them to maintain them.
It
really is this simple: Mr. Fred
Bell of the BIA, if we see graffiti on one of your signs for
more than 24 hours, that sign will be taken down by the city and
your organization will not be allowed to be put that sign back
up. Maintain your signs or lose them.
|
And while we are at it... we might
as well point out a sign for our city graffiti task force, this
one is just down a half a block from City Hall on the new
Pierson Boulevard. We don't know hzow long it has been there but
the picture below was taken on Monday. |
|
Mayor Alex Bias, City Manager Ann Marie Gallant and Gallant’s
negotiation team met Monday with members of the Coachella Valley
Association of Governments and planned to ask for a 14-day
extension of CVAG’s June 1 deadline for voting on the plan.
Portion of our precious disappearing
Bill Of Rights shown below. Once these rights are
legislated away, we will cease to be a free nation of
"liberty and justice for all". How we are so
eager to give up our rights for the false sense of
"security" Those of us who do this deserve
neither.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting
the free exercise thereof (DHS Sign Ordinance?);
or abridging the freedom
of speech (DHS Sign ordinance?),
or of the press (fire
[COP] volunteers who are whistleblowers);
or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to
petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Amendment II
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a
free state, the right of
the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
(CCW's rarely given out
in DHS)
Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses,
papers, and effects, against
unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated,
(the MSHCP pretty much
violates this underlined clause with impunity) and
no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by
oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be
searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

We
Divert Just A Bit
The censored scenes from
ABC's 9/11 Docudrama
This
is a bit off our normal path but we happened upon several video
clips that were cut from the ABC docudrama on the events leading up
to 9/11.
Cut
Scenes Here
Our viewing of these clips makes it clear to us why members
of the Clinton administration wanted these sections edited out -
"Using missiles for assassination (of Bin Laden) is destined
for failure.."
We
make no commentary on the scenes themselves except to say that in
this day of the internet, censorship is nearly impossible. These
scenes were obtained from uncut airings in other parts of the world.
It is the airing in the U.S. that was censored.

SPRINGS----A "DICTATORSHIP"? WHO GAVE 3 PEOPLE THE RIGHT
TO OUST YOUR ELECTED MAYOR? HOW CAN THEY KEEP HIM FROM ATTENDING THE
MAYORS LUNCHEON?
I think the people of
DHS should take him in a limo and attend the meeting and LET
YOURSELVES BE HEARD. Is this America or is DHS a city that has no
say over your city and the people you elect?
It is time that the
DIRTY LINEN and things in the CLOSET are investigated and those
guilty of DISEHONEST, ILLEGAL ACTIONS are brought to JUSTICE. The
Mayor was not in office when the people were swindled and put in
bankruptcy. I AM OUTRAGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DON'T LET THEM GET AWAY

DHS
Mayor ,peoples choice.
August 31, 09:01 a.m.
The city council of DHS do not want their private back room Deals
(study sessions, closed meetings) known to the people of the city
they are supposed to represent, because their agenda is to replace
the current population, who they fell are beneath them, with more
affluent residents. They forget however that these peoples taxes in
the past paid for what is there today. The businesses there were
built up by their patronage.
If the truth were known, everyone would be calling on the
authorities to have the whole lot arrested for their involvement in
looting the cities coffers.
Their little secret government will soon come crashing down, and it
will be little orange jump suits for them all. The justice Dept.
does not usually make arrests until they have everyone in their net,
and have traced the money for recovery. It will a lesson to all
other little communities, that this type of criminal activity will
not be tolerated in this country.

" RECALL THEM ALL!! "Just another smoke screen for what's
really going on. They get rid of anyone that they deem a
"threat" to their cause. (control)
Has any one noticed?
Not only are they stupid, but dangerous also? Is anyone asking why
business people are moving out and the city is imploding? Where is
all the money from the new homes? The city is broke again?! Why
isn't city counsel concentrating on bring in and promoting old and
new businesses and fixing the problem. Now they look to try to annex
more land on Palm Drive, while they can't run what they have? Why
did Hank settle a major chunk of change in a back room deal, when
the city has insurance for these things? And all we have is stupid
comments by Mary and Hank and now Parks, but they want to silence
the mayor? Painting in pink does not constitute a crime but counsel
members not being able to answer where the money went is. WHAT IN
YOUR WALLET HANK?
